The Pasco County Democratic Executive Committee

WHEREAS Social Security is the most successful domestic program in American history having provided a guaranteed safety net for millions of Americans since 1935(1), and
WHEREAS Nationally, nine out of ten individuals age 65 and over receive Social Security (2), and
WHEREAS Florida is home to six out of ten congressional districts with the largest number of Social Security Beneficiaries in the country(3), and
WHEREAS according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) the expected trust fund exhaustion date - the year in which the trust fund balance falls to zero--is 2052(4), and
WHEREAS, the CBO estimates that transition costs for partial privatization of Social Security would be in excess of 2 trillion dollars ($2,000,000,000,000) (4)
THEREFORE the Pasco Democratic Executive Committee (PDEC) affirms the success of the Social Security System, and Resolves:
- THAT the membership will work to:
- save,
- to strengthen,
- and to secure the future of our Social Security system, and
- THAT the PDEC will oppose any effort to:
- weaken,
- phase out
- and/or replace
Social Security, in whole or in part, with any private or personal accounts-based system, and
- THAT the Pasco Democratic Executive Committee will urge elected representatives to work in a bi-partisan manner to ensure the long-term solvency of Social Security.
