Pasco County Democrats take a Stand in Support of Social Security
A resolution against the recent White House proposal to privatize Social Security was unanimously passed by the Pasco Democrat Executive Committee on March 12, 2005 .
The RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF SOCIAL SECURITY outlines a plan by the committee calling for the membership to work to save, strengthen, and to secure the future of the nation’s current Social Security system.
“ Florida is home to congressional districts with the largest number of Social Security Beneficiaries in the country. Pasco County Democrats are taking a firm stand in support of the current Social Security system." said LaVaunne Miller, the Chairwoman of the Pasco DEC. "This resolution is about defending a successful retirement program and working to preserve and strengthen that program for future generations.”
A key point of the resolution is to encourage elected representatives to find a long-term solution to the expected program funding shortfalls, rather than phasing out or replacing the current Social Security system with a private or personal accounts-based system.
“We understand that there are long-term financing issues related to maintaining the program in the future,” said Miller. “According to the Congressional Budget Office, we have some time to address those issues. The CBO estimates that the date of the expected shortfall is projected somewhere between 2034 and 2085, and is not as immediate as the current White House would like us to believe.”
This Committee resolution is one in a series of steps towards informing local democrats and others about the implications of proposed changes to the current system.
